Remote Off-site Backup! Many
organizations are reluctant to keep their backup tapes on-site;
in their data centers. Citing that if there were ever a disaster
at their location ( fire, flood, thief, etc), they best have
their mission critical data backed up, protected and stored
somewhere else off site, safe and sound. In fact, some companies
spend several thousands of dollars a month to have, what amounts
to a courier service, pick up their tapes, haul them off site
and store them in a remote location. Why
not just ship your data over your existing WAN connection
directly to an off-site location? Because complex, cost prohibitive
solutions that come with distance limitations were the only
way to do this until iSCSI came about.
By utilizing iSCSI over your existing WAN connection, you
can perform your backups over Ethernet and send the "backup
job" to a tape library / Disk-to-Disk Back Appliance
located at a secure remote site. That site could be another
site within your company or a service organization who provides
vaulting and controlled environment type services.
Keep in mind that your backup system does not care where the
tape library is physically located, it just shows up as a
locally attached device on your system. So, your restore jobs
are relatively seamless and are really no different than the
way you are doing it today.
If you are an enterprise that has one or more remote sites,
you can use iSCSI to share the same tape library located centrally
in your data center. Thus, this provides an off-site disaster
solution for them as well.
simpleSAN can
help you design a data protection plan/disaster recovery plan,
via iSCSI, that is low in cost but is high in assurance level.
iSCSI, all the availability,
scaleability and manageability benefits of fibre channel SANs
at a fraction of the cost and without the intense learning
curve.
